Tsung-Yu Tsai, Cello
Musician
Premieres, pressure, and precision are Tsung-Yu (Benjamin) Tsai's natural habitat. With the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra, the Taiwanese cellist has brought new works to life across Europe and North America, earning a reputation for performances that treat contemporary scores as living theatre—alert, risk-embracing, and exacting.
A fellow of both the Tanglewood Music Center and the Lucerne Festival Academy, two of classical music’s most selective training grounds, Tsai moves fluidly between landmark concert halls and close-range collaboration. He has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, KKL Luzern, and Seiji Ozawa Hall, performing under conductors including Marin Alsop, Giancarlo Guerrero, Susanna Mälkki, and Andris Nelsons. His chamber music mentors include members of the Emerson, Juilliard, and Guarneri Quartets, and he has collaborated with artists such as Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Yo-Yo Ma. He has also participated in international festivals including the Sarasota Music Festival, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada, and the New York String Orchestra Seminar.
Winner of the 2024 Mason Gross Concerto Competition, Tsai appeared as soloist in Lutosławski’s Cello Concerto with the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra in spring 2025, a cornerstone work of the twentieth-century cello repertoire.
A recipient of the W. Robert & Leone Schare Scholarship, Tsai is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts at Rutgers University, studying with Jonathan Spitz, principal cellist of the New Jersey Symphony. Based in the New York–New Jersey area, he teaches at Wharton Performing Arts School and serves as sectional coach and audition adjudicator for the New Jersey Youth Symphony. He holds degrees from McGill University and Stony Brook University, where his mentors included Matt Haimovitz and Colin Carr.
