RULES AND REGULATIONS

The 2024 NAIMC will be judged online through video submissions, with a final in-person concert and award ceremony on June 1, 2024, at The DiMenna Center.


*New Asia Chamber Music Society holds the official authority to implement any necessary changes.


MISSION statement

One of the New Asia Chamber Music Society’s missions is to bring exceptional performances drawn from the canon of Western music and contemporary Asian culture. The 2nd New Asia International Music Competition (NAIMC) for Piano, Flute, and Strings was created to promote excellent instrumental performances, explore contemporary repertoire from Asia, and showcase the interpretation of these compositions.


PARTICIPATION

The competition is open to all musicians aged 4 to 18 years old for Piano solo, Strings solo (open to violin, viola, cello, and double bass), and Flute solo. Applicants’ age and category are determined by their age on Jan 15, 2024.

  • Category A. Age 4- 6: birthdate from Jan 14, 2017 to Jan 15, 2020

    Category B. Age 7 - 9: birthdate from Jan 14, 2014 to 15, 2017

    Category C. Age 10 - 12: birthdate from Jan 14, 2011 to Jan 15, 2014

    Category D. Age 13-15: birthdate from Jan 14, 2008 to Jan 15, 2011

    Category E. Age 16 -18: birthdate from Jan 14, 2005 to Jan 15, 2008


The competition consists of ONE round:

  • Video recording submission with the application 

  • Duration: 3 - 10 minutes (category A, B) 5 - 10 minutes (category C) 10 - 20 minutes (category D, E)

  • Repertoire: 2 or more compositions of different styles. (i.e., lyrical and virtuosic or contrasting movements)

  • At least one of the repertoire selections must be composed or arranged by an Asian composer written after 1960. Any genre of music is accepted. Example: an arrangement of a popular song or movie soundtrack, or pieces by composers such as Bright Sheng and Isang Yun.

  • A collaborative pianist is optional but recommended. A collaborative pianist for the recording is the responsibility of the applicants.

*The Jury reserves the right not to award prizes, and all Jury decisions are final and can not be appealed. 

2) Award Ceremony and Winners’ Concert
The Award Ceremony and Winners’ Concert will be held on June 1, 2024, at OPERA America’s National Opera Center in New York City. Winners of all categories will be invited to perform their competition repertoire. Winner may be invited to perform chamber music with our distinguished jurors. Winners will pay a performance fee of 200 USD, due on April 15, 2024, 11:59 PM (ET) to confirm the winners’ participation in the concert. The performance fee includes the reception, meeting the juror, photo, and video of the performance. The collaborative pianist is provided but not included in the performance fee. Winners will make arrangements to pay the collaborative pianist separately.

Winners unable to participate in the Award Ceremony and Winners’ Concert in person are invited to watch live online. A certificate will be mailed out to each winner.


INTERNATIONAL JURORS:


APPLICATION PROCESS

  • The application fee is 80 USD per applicant via the application form. Payments can be made via credit card with the application form on the New Asia Chamber Music Society website.

  • Applicants should apply online via the “apply” button on the New Asia Chamber Music Society's competition page. 

  • Applications with unpaid application fees will not be accepted.

  • Incomplete applications without required documents will not be processed.

  • Applications with inaccurate personal information are considered invalid. The application fee will not be returned.

  • The competition repertoire cannot be changed after submission. The competition committee reserves the right to dismiss any candidate not meeting the application requirement.

  • Candidates waive all legal rights to recording and photos submitted or broadcasts that may be made in connection with the competition. All legal rights are reserved by the New Asian Chamber Music Society and no fee is payable to any competitor for performances, photos, recordings, or television broadcasts. NACMS can use any submission materials at its discretion.

  • Competitors will receive feedback from the judges.


COMPETITION RECORDINGS

  • Video recordings must be submitted electronically.

  • A collaborative pianist is optional but recommended.

  • Record with proper lighting. Professional quality recording is not mandatory, however, the sound must be clearly audible.

  • Video and audio must be recorded simultaneously.

  • No editing is allowed. Any editing will result in disqualification.

  • Memorization is optional but recommended.

  • Please use a single-angle video.

  • Applicants are required to submit a separate application if participating in 2 or more categories.

  • Each composition should be recorded and uploaded separately.

  • LINKS to the recordings (YouTube or other) may be submitted with the online application.

  • The uploaded video on Youtube.com should be marked as Unlisted.

  • Do not introduce yourself or announce the name of the piece at the beginning of the video

  • Once the application ends, the music/ title can not be changed.

  • Please mark the title as Full Name/ Instrument/ Category/ Composer/ Music

    • Ex: Mark Smith/ Violin/ Category A/ Mozart: Violin sonata Mvt. III

  • It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the video link is functional. Failure to provide a working link may lead to disqualification.


WINNERS AND AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT 

The result will be announced by March 1, 2024, via email, the NACMS website, and social media platforms. Attendance of the Award Ceremony must be confirmed by April 15, 2024.
