1st NEW ASIA INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION (NAIMC)

RULES AND REGULATIONS

The 2023 NAIMC will be judged online through video submissions, with a final in-person concert and award ceremony on June 4, 2023 at 7 PM, in Marc A. Scorca Hall at New York City’s National Opera Center.

MISSION

In accordance with the New Asia Chamber Music Society’s mission to bring exceptional performances drawn from the canon of western music and contemporary Asian culture, the 1st New Asia International Music Competition (NAIMC) for Piano and Strings is created to promote excellent instrumental performances, exploration of contemporary repertoire from Asia, and showcasing interpretation of these compositions.

 

PARTICIPATION

COMPETITION is open to all artists between the ages 4-6 (category A), age 7-9 (category B), age 10-12 (category C), age 13-15 (category D), and age 16-18 (category E) in the following classical music categories:

  • Piano solo 

  • Strings solo (open to violin, viola, cello, and double bass) 

*Applicants’ age and category are determined by their age as of January 31, 2023.

The competition will consist of one round:

  • Video recording submission with the application 

  • Duration: 3 - 10 minutes (category A, B) 10-20 minutes (category C, D, E)

  • Repertoire: 2 or 3 compositions of different styles of the applicant’s choice. (i.e., lyrical and virtuosic, or contrasting movements)

  • At least one of the repertoire selections must be composed by an Asian composer, written after 1960.

  • An accompanist, if applicable, is recommended.

  • Grand Prize (chosen between Strings First Prize and Piano First Prize)

  • Piano First Prize 

  • Piano Second Prize

  • Piano Third Prize 

  • Piano Honorable Mentions

*The Jury reserves the right not to award prizes, and all Jury decisions are final and can not be appealed. 

2) Virtual masterclass opportunity for all participants
All participants are invited to sign up for a virtual masterclass with competition jurors before announcing prizes. Each student receives a 25 minutes virtual class. The masterclass Fee is USD $100.

3) Award Ceremony and Winners’ Concert
The Award Ceremony and Winners’ Concert will be held on June 4, 2023, at 7 PM in Marc A. Scorca Hall at New York City’s National Opera Center. Winners of all categories are invited to perform their competition repertoire. They may be asked to perform chamber music with our distinguished jurors. A performance fee of USD 200 is due on March 15, 2023, to confirm the winners’ participation in the concert.

Winners unable to participate in the Award Ceremony and Winners’ Concert in person are invited to watch live online. A certificate will be mailed out to each winner.

  • The application fee is USD $80 per applicant via the application form.

  • Applicants may apply online via the button below.

  • Applications with unpaid application fees will not be accepted.

COMPETITION RECORDINGS

Video Recordings must be submitted electronically. 

  • LINKS to the recordings (YouTube or other) may be submitted with the online application.  

  • If you encounter a problem, you may also send your links to contact@newasiacms.org. 

  • Please take the time to test the links and make sure they work. 

  • If a problem occurs, you will be asked to resend/re-upload the video. We appreciate your understanding. 

 

WINNERS AND AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT 

The result will be announced on March 1, 2023, via email, the NACMS website, and social media platforms. Attendance of the Award Ceremony must be confirmed by March 15, 2023.
