Taiwanese-British musician Shu-Wei Tseng 曾淑偉 returns to Between the Bars this September, inviting us to step into the ingenious world of dance in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Discover how a young cellist, destined to become a world sensation, almost single-handedly brought Bach’s once-neglected Cello Suites back into the spotlight, transforming these Baroque masterpieces into some of the most iconic and beloved works for solo cello and beyond.

Audience members will have the opportunity to conduct Richarlita live using simple cue cards

Join clarinetist Yu-Ting Cheng, associate director of NACMS, and pianist Yeontaek Oh as they explore Poulenc’s clarinet sonata and more—discovering how clarinet and piano become equal partners, constantly trading melody, accompaniment, and musical storytelling between two voices.

As we come to the close of AAPI Heritage Month this May, we are thrilled to welcome Award-winning singer-songwriter Cheeyang Ng to the Between the Bars series. Join us for a special evening of music, storytelling, and conversation celebrating Asian American voices and artistry.

This April, Between the Bars welcomes Paige Su 蘇珮卿 with a workshop like you’ve never experienced before. Paige Su is a rare singer-songwriter who performs original music while singing and playing the electric harp within a full band setting. A multi-instrumentalist and composer, she is also proficient in piano, flute, Indian bansuri, orchestration, and film scoring.

This March, Between the Bars welcomes Duo YUMENO with a program where East meets West, as the shamisen meets the cello.

Harpist Kristi Shade will walk audiences through the harp’s fascinating mechanics, its role throughout history, and the many colors it can produce, with live demonstrations and performance throughout. Ideal for first-time listeners, curious minds, and anyone looking for a thoughtful, inspiring Sunday afternoon.

The acclaimed Duo YUMENO will take a musical journey to reflect on the changing of the seasons with a diverse program including its commissioned works by American and Japanese composers.
